Building Sustainable Local Governance in Iraq: LOGDEVI Concludes After Two Years of Transformative Work

The Swedish-funded Local Governance Development Project in Iraq – Phase 2 (LOGDEVI2) is concluded after two years of implementation. Led by SALAR International and IRFAD, the initiative strengthened inclusive governance in Duhok, Diwaniyah, and Muthanna.

LOGDEVI2 was the latest phase in several years of work in Iraq where SALAR International and its implementing partner IRFAD have fostered strong partnerships with local, regional and national government actors to engage in transformative work to strengthen inclusive and responsive local governance in Iraq.

Implemented in the provinces of Duhok, Diwaniyah, and Muthanna, and in close collaboration with the High Commission for Coordination of Provinces (HCCP), the initiative introduced administrative reforms, as well as contributed to promoting capacity for local planning, advancing inclusive education, and integrating climate considerations into governance systems. It also supported women’s leadership, child protection mechanisms, and institutional dialogue within the framework of decentralisation. As the project closes, partners and local actors are left with sustainable tools, policies, and frameworks designed to continue supporting development long after the end of the partnership.

To commemorate the project’s closure, the LOGDEVI team has released the third and final issue of the project newsletter. This edition highlights the project’s achievements, from the adoption of inclusive education models to the strengthening of social protection systems and climate planning capacities. Readers are invited to access the newsletter, included as an annex, to explore detailed accounts of these milestones and learn how the lessons and practices developed under LOGDEVI2 will continue to promote local governance in Iraq.
