SALAR International at the World Urban Forum
4-6 November the World Urban Forum is taking place in Cairo, Egypt. SALAR International will participate and through different dialogue and networking sessions, we will emphasize local governments’ roles in urban resilience and sustainable urban development.
Thursday 31 October marks World Cities Day – a day to promote the international community’s interest in global urbanisation and encourage cooperation among countries to address challenges related to urbaniszation and contribute to sustainable urban development around the world.
It is expected that the world’s urban population will more double its current size by 2050, at which point nearly 7 of 10 people will live in cities. Cities are centers of economic growth and development, yet they also face demographic, environmental, economic, and social challenges. With the goal of improving residents’ quality of life, health, comfort and safety, SALAR International supports local and regional governments in sustainable and inclusive urban planning, development and management.
Urban development with a focus on the needs of children and youth also offers opportunities for sustainability of communities. In line with the theme of this year’s World Cities Day being ‘Youth leading climate and local action for cities’ , we recognize the urgent need to increase capacities, and identify new methods, tools and solutions to involve youth in urban development processes, as well as to tackle climate vulnerability challenges. Locally-driven, evidence-based and inclusive urban development can contribute to progressive transformation and more resilient and sustainable urban areas.
It is against this backdrop that SALAR International will be attending the Twelfth World Urban Forum in Cairo, Egypt, next week. Through different dialogue and networking sessions, we will emphasize local governments’ roles in urban resilience and sustainable urban development.
