Delegation from the Republic of North Macedonia visit Sweden
On October 23-27 SALAR International had the honor to host a delegation from the Republic of North Macedonia visiting Sweden.
The delegation was consisting of key national stakeholders and decision makers, including the minister and officials from the ministry of Local Self-Government, officials from the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, as well as the leadership of ZELS – the Association of the Units of Local Self-Government of the Republic of North Macedonia – a sister organization to SALAR.
As part of SALAR International´s ongoing support to local management and sustainable development with a focus on municipal waste management in North Macedonia, the study visit served an opportunity for the parties to exchange views on key concepts for decentralization and local governance as well as to emphasis the needed dialogue for sustainable Waste Management, its key-benefits, and the application of EU guidelines in practice. The latter was ensured through a comprehensive introduction to the Swedish Waste Management system, where the delegation also had the opportunity to visit some examples of integrated waste management system, sustainable model project, citizen participation and climate change adaption, in the form of field visits.
Sustainable municipal waste management in North Macedonia
With funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), SALAR International implements the project ‘Sustainable municipal waste management services’ in North Macedonia during 2022-2027. The overall aim is to improve municipal waste management services in North Macedonia with a view to full compliance with EU standards, thus improving environmental sustainability and quality of life for all inhabitants.
